Everything you need to prepare before traveling abroad for medical treatment — documents, insurance, medications, and more.
Proper preparation is the difference between a stressful medical journey and a smooth one. This checklist covers everything you need to organize before departure — whether you are traveling for cardiac surgery, IVF, orthopedics, or any other treatment.
Medical Documents
- All previous medical reports, test results, and imaging (CT, MRI, X-rays)
- Discharge summaries from any previous hospitalizations
- Current medication list with dosages and brand names
- List of allergies (medications, food, latex)
- Blood group certificate
- Any genetic test results relevant to your condition
- Vaccination records (including COVID-19 vaccination certificate if required)
Administrative Documents
- Passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond travel dates)
- Medical visa (obtained through your country's Indian embassy)
- Hospital invitation letter
- Travel insurance documentation
- Emergency contact information (stored separately from your luggage)
- Copies of all documents stored digitally (email them to yourself)
Medications and Health Items
- Sufficient supply of all current medications for the entire trip plus 2 extra weeks
- Medications in original labeled packaging (required for customs)
- Doctor's prescription or letter for controlled substances
- Basic first aid kit (antiseptic, bandages, thermometer)
- Compression stockings for long flights (essential for surgical patients)
- Any dietary supplements currently taken (inform your treating doctor)
Financial Preparation
- International bank cards that work in India (Visa/Mastercard widely accepted)
- Notify your bank of international travel before departure
- Carry USD or EUR for exchange upon arrival (better rates than local currency)
- Keep a written record of your hospital cost estimate and payment terms
- Emergency cash reserve separate from main funds
Packing for a Medical Stay
- Loose, comfortable clothing (especially post-operative recovery)
- Slip-on shoes (easy for mobility post-procedure)
- Personal care items (hospital provides basics, but personal items help)
- Entertainment (books, tablet) for recovery downtime
- Phone charger and international adapter (India uses Type C/D/M plugs)
- Small amount of home food for comfort (within customs regulations)
Before You Leave Home
- Arrange care for dependents, children, and pets
- Inform your employer of your absence
- Set up mobile roaming or purchase an India SIM on arrival
- Brief a trusted family member on your itinerary, hospital name, and BMTA contact
- Confirm your BMTA coordinator's WhatsApp number for in-country support
On the Day of Departure
- Arrive at airport 3 hours before international flight
- Carry all medical documents and medications in your carry-on (never checked luggage)
- Confirm airport pickup with your BMTA India coordinator
- Save hospital address and coordinator number in your phone
